How to access this service
You can be referred to our service by your GP or any other Mental Health Practitioner.
Once they have referred you to the service, your referral will be screened in our weekly meeting, and providing that you meet criteria for an ADHD assessment you will be added to our waiting list for a new patient assessment.
If you have already been diagnosed with ADHD within the NHS, we will request the full diagnostic assessment in order for us to offer you a medication review. Without this you will on our waiting list for a new assessment.
Please see the referral form here: Referral form [docx] 94KB, Please ensure all sections of the form are completed before submitting it to nlft.referrals.adultadhdservice@nhs.net
However, if you wish to refer a young person who is due to turn 18 soon who has a diagnosis of ADHD please use this referral form: CAMHS referral form [docx] 79KB.
What to expect
Prior to your assessment you will be requested to complete several questionnaires and if possible find school reports to bring with you for your assessment. If possible it is useful to attend your appointment with someone who knows you well, such as family member, partner or friend.
The assessments will include the clinician gathering information about your childhood and adulthood, determining whether you meet the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis.
Once the assessment has finished, the clinician will write up a report which will be sent to you, your GP and the person who referred you for an assessment service. The report will include treatment recommendations where appropriate for you.
You do not have to treat your ADHD with medication if you do not want to. However, if you decide this is the best course of action for you, the clinician will help you find the right medication and dosage for your needs and life. This will be done very gradually in a process called ‘titration’. Once you are on a stable dose, we will transfer you back to your GP who will be able to keep prescribing you on that dose from now on.
During the titration period we will be closely monitoring your blood pressure, pulse and weight due to the common side effects of ADHD medication; such as, high blood pressure, increased pulse rate and appetite suppression.Service manager(s)
